The Takanami-class "Oonami" is the second fourth-generation helicopter-equipped general-purpose escort ship, following the "Murasame" class.

The ship type was designed with stealth in mind, and has improved surface running capabilities compared to the Murasame-class. It was completed on March 13, 2003, and is deployed to the Yokosuka 2nd Escort Division.
